What the treatment involves
A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It is the right answer when a tooth has cracked, has a filling larger than what is left of it, or has had a root canal and needs protecting.
At the first visit the tooth is numbed and shaped, then scanned with a small camera — there is no tray of putty to bite into, and no gagging. You leave with a temporary crown that looks and works like a tooth while the ceramic one is made.
About two weeks later we try the finished crown in, check the shade in daylight, adjust your bite and fix it in place. Most people forget which tooth it was within a month.
A ceramic crown at Northlight costs £695, including the temporary. It carries a five-year guarantee, and if it ever comes off we re-cement it for £65 — free within the guarantee.
We only suggest a crown when we can show you why on the X-ray. If a large filling would do the job for another few years, we will tell you, and let you choose.

Common questions
Why do I need a crown and not a filling?
When a filling would be larger than the tooth left around it, the tooth is likely to crack. A crown holds it together. We will show you on the X-ray why we are suggesting it.
Does a crown need special care?
No. Brush and clean between it like any tooth. The edge where crown meets tooth is where decay can start, so the hygiene visits matter.
